String Mentor Day: String players (from either CCYO or Encore Strings) have
a pizza party after Encore Strings rehearsal, then work side-by-side with 5th
grade beginning students. They help them learn note reading and good
technique. At the end of the session, they perform a piece so the younger kids
can see what they might sound like in another year or two!
Christmas Carols at the Kris Kringle Marketplace: We celebrate the holiday season with easy (but beautiful) carols at the Kris Kringle Marketplace event at the Charles County Fairgrounds, hosted by the Charles County Arts Alliance.
Fundraiser at Chick Fil-A: This is not only an opportunity to raise money for our
organization, but also a chance for students to play solos or small ensembles in
a stress free environment.
Masterclass: Students have the opportunity to play in a masterclass at least once a year. Previous masterclass clinicians have included Olivia Gutoff, the previous director the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras, and Gregg Goodhart, a motivational teacher and speaker on using neuroscience to improve practice.
Sectional rehearsals: Professional coaches lead each section in specific work on their parts. Challenging string parts are also demonstrated in video tutorials on this website.
New England Music Camp
Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra offers the following link to many local and national summer camps on their website:
Arts Fest in La Plata: Strings play fiddle tunes, band plays their concert
pieces in a final public performance for the season.
In addition to weekly rehearsals and two main concerts, members of our ensembles have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:
Fiddling at the Fair: String players (from either CCYO or Encore Strings) perform fun fiddle tunes at the Charles County Fair!
